A Newcastle man was fatally shot in the chest while in an apartment on Thursday, police said.
Police and paramedics rushed to the scene on Darby Street in the inner-city suburb of Cooks Hill after members of the public called around 12.45pm.
A NSW Ambulance spokesman said a man was treated for wounds to the chest and that the person who called emergency services had said there had been gunshots fired.
“Multiple crews responded, including a medical team,” the spokesman said.
Paramedics were unable to save the man’s life. Police confirmed he had died but had not yet formally identified him.
A statement from police indicated he died from a single gunshot wound but NSW Ambulance said there were multiple wounds.
Newcastle detectives have opened an investigation.
More to come.
